Alia's affinity for games and especially making them started with her infatuation with Bioware games - Mass Effect, Dragon Age, and so on. As for a multi-modal storyteller, for Alia, game development was the ultimate form of creative expression, where all other forms of expression she was exploring throughout her life (music, visual art, writing) - collided together, gaining new forms, angles and dimensions in the cross-fire.
Alia was especially intrigued with how games are capable of making us 'feel', when we are worried for the protagonists, immersed in the stories, temporarily colliding with the player character for the sake of pursuing same goals. In 2015, she enrolled at York University to study affective dimensions of gaming and game storytelling. In 2020, Alia finished her dissertation exploring intersections between game academia and industry, creativity and code, research and creation. Alia's PhD project was producing two video games in their entirety, being involved as a sole developer, game artist, writer, and music composer.
Alia's PhD project evolved into Collider - an indie video game studio, game resource hub, and active contributor to the industry knowledge.
